This Privacy Policy explains how Basic Bookish LLC ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use BasicBookish.com (the "Site"). By using the Site, you agree to the practices described here. BasicBookish.com is a free editorial reading platform; we do not process purchases or payments through the Site.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the information needed to run your account and the reading features you choose to use:

  • Account information: your email address and, when you set one, a display name and username.

  • Profile information: anything you add to your profile, such as a bio, avatar, location, favourite genres and tropes, and social links.

  • Reading activity and content you create: reviews, ratings, reading status and logs, wishlists, fan art, discussions, comments, and similar contributions.

  • Basic usage information: standard technical data such as device and browser type and pages viewed, used to keep the Site secure and improve it.

You control how much profile information you share, and you can make your profile private at any time from your settings.

2. Signing In With Google

When you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares a limited set of profile information from your Google Account with us, based on the permissions you grant:

  • Your name — used to set up your initial display name;

  • Your email address — used to create and secure your account;

  • Your profile picture — used as your initial avatar.

We use this information solely to create your BasicBookish account, sign you in, and set up your profile. We do not use it for advertising, and we never sell it or share it with third parties for their own purposes.

Our use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy (developers.google.com/terms/api-services-user-data-policy), including the Limited Use requirements. You can review or revoke BasicBookish's access to your Google Account at any time from your Google Account permissions (myaccount.google.com/permissions).

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account and sign you in;

  • Display your reviews, ratings, and other contributions on the Site;

  • Power reading features such as your shelves, reading status, and recommendations;

  • Keep the Site safe, prevent abuse, and respond to your requests;

  • Improve and maintain the Site.

We do not use your reading activity to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell your personal information.

4. Where Your Information Is Stored

Your data is stored and processed using Supabase, our hosting and database provider, which manages our database, authentication, and file storage on our behalf. Your information may be processed on servers located outside your country of residence.

We rely on industry-standard safeguards, including access controls and row-level security, to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

5. Sharing With Third Parties

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with service providers that help us operate the Site (such as our hosting and email providers), and only to the extent needed to provide those services.

Content you choose to make public—such as your reviews, ratings, and public profile—is visible to other users by design. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users and the Site.

6. Data Retention & Account Deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Site.

Deleting your account permanently removes your first-person content. When you delete your account, your reviews, fan art, discussions, and comments are hard-deleted along with your account—this cannot be undone. Some records may persist in backups for a limited period before they are overwritten, and certain editorial references may remain in a de-identified form.

7. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you;

  • Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;

  • Delete your account and the content associated with it.

You can update most of your information directly in your account settings, or contact us to exercise any of these rights.

8. Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and understand how the Site is used. For details on the cookies we use and how to manage them, see our Cookies Policy at /legal/cookies.

9. Children's Privacy

The Site is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.
