The Aesmyrean Duet by Bree Grenwich and Parker Lennox is an epic romantasy duology within the Sundered Realms Extended Universe, launching with The Ascended, where Thais Morvaren, a young woman hiding her rare starlight-forging magic in a coastal village, is exposed during a priest's ritual and forcibly entered into the deadly Trials of Ascension alongside her twin brother Thatcher. Thrust into brutal competitions for godhood against the tyrannical King of the Gods—the Aesymar—she's bound to a mentor, the arrogant necromancer prince Xül, whose sharp banter and dark secrets ignite tense, forbidden chemistry amid high-stakes challenges, political intrigue, and an ancient malevolent force threatening the divine realm. As Thais channels her defiance into survival and vengeance, navigating betrayals, celestial powers, and unraveling heavens, the duet explores themes of ambition, sacrifice, and destiny in a lush world of shadow magic and cosmic peril.

Jamie’s review

Very easy to devour this book. Very devourable. I loved the twin connection between Thais and Thatcher. Loved that they were trying to keep this life changing secret and blend in as mortals. The stakes were very high and I feel that as a reader. I felt their heartbreak and their desire to right all the wrongs that been done to them and their family.

I wanted more from Xul. I liked him, I just wanted more from him. He felt cold and robotic which was in line with his character but I wanted him to be more vulnerable when it came to Thais. Their story felt too surface level for the actions he was taking and the proclamations he was making towards the end. Felt abrupt and insta-lovey. But I do love them!

I was surprised at how emotional this book was, I love the devastation, yes Grenwich and Lennox, devastate me!!!

I did feel the world building was a little unnecessarily complex. I had a hard time keeping all the aesymar, legends, primordials and gods straight. But the bad guys were bad guy-ing and the back stabbers were back stabbing. All the scheming made for good twists.

As usual, I wish there was more humor. I just like my book friends to be funny like my real friends 😂 This is a good cliffhanger but not like “I will die on this cliff” I am eagerly awaiting book 2!

Erica’s review

Phewwwww that was a games and trials book if I've ever read one! Which, don't trust my star rating if you love a games and trials book - I just don't. 😬 But, with a trope I don't love being the main focus of the book and still giving it a 4 - means it was still great! The cliffhanger is top tier so it definitely has me readyyyyy for book 2 of the duet (no release date as of yet).

Few things that smashed for me: trial 3 got me and I actually loved it. Love the multi POV. I got some real emotional destruction at the very end - we all know I love that. And again - the cliffhanger - Muh! Delish!

Things that didn't do it for me: I just get very tired of games and trials - literally after 1 so a whole book full makes me weary. And Thais (FMC) and Xül's (MMC) chemistry was really lackluster for me until really far into the book. It was a weird match IMO and I had trouble with their interactions. I wanted more but I still can't put my finger on what that more is. A note I took about 50% into the book was: I feel like she's just chasing him around whining like, "why can't we be together?" I like it reversed in my smut books!!

That being said - super interesting quick read - I do appreciate the glossery of the world building breakdown - def needed in this book. And the pronunciation guide - which I referenced about 10,000 times! Thanks Bree & Parker! 😂
