Flesh and Fire is a prequel romantasy series by Jennifer L. Armentrout set in the same universe as Blood and Ash, beginning with A Shadow in the Ember, where Seraphena "Sera" Mierel, a young woman born as the Maiden destined to summon the gods' wrath and destroy the world, serves in the Shadowlands court of the enigmatic Primal of Death, Nyktos. Tasked with seducing and killing him to fulfill a prophecy she resents, Sera instead uncovers layers of ancient secrets, forbidden attraction, and political intrigue amid threats from rival Primals and a looming rot corrupting the realms. As her own mysterious powers awaken and loyalties fracture, Sera grapples with her fated role, her growing bond with the brooding Nyktos, and the blurred line between vengeance and desire, while later books expand the epic stakes without revealing key resolutions.

Jamie’s review

Nyktos is a cinnamon roll of an MMC and I did like him but he's too much of a green flag. Sure, he kills anyone that even looks at Sera wrong, but I wanted more morally gray vibes.

I liked Seraphena and a lot of the plot holes from the FBAA series are explained. But the explanations are VERY complicated. Unnecessarily so. The Fates and the Ancients interfering with everything and maintaining "the balance" got old after so many hundreds of pages.

It started to drag for me especially in the last book (770 pages) but I was invested in the story. I just wish it was shorter, WAY shorter.

Erica’s review

Okay…..where oh where to begin with this one? This is the prequel series to From Blood and Ash, as I’m sure most of you know. I read this a year and 1/2 after reading 5 books of FBAA thinking, “oh, I’ll read this 4 book series really quickly before book 6 of FBAA comes out”. Here’s how I’m breaking down my very confusing thoughts on this series:

Pros:

Loved getting more in-depth info tied to FBAA because I love that series so freaking much. I love Nyktos and Sera and the supporting characters and of course JLA can really write the shit outta the spice. I am even more excited to do a re-read of FBAA and move onto the newest book 6!

Cons:

4 books, 4 HUGE, long books. Book 4 is 770 pages and they spend the 1st 110 pages in a freaking bedroom. I was SO over it. I just wanted some damn EDITING. By books 3 and 4 - we are getting a ton of repeating of the same inner monologue sentences and I wanted to scream. Usually I’m ignoring my life responsibilities to read these books and this series had me wanting to do the dishes. And, my personal flaw is I refuse to DNF.

Am I happy I read it? I don’t know. It is definitely intertwined with FBAA so if you love that series like I do - I still say read it but go in with your skim reading hat on. Which, I’m also terrible at! But, by book 4, I had to skim read so much and TBH missed absolutely nothing doing that. 🫣 Am I still a huge JLA fan? Yes! Do I want to talk to her Editors? Bigger YES!
