The Wolves of Ruin by Sable Sorensen is a dark romantasy trilogy set in the war-torn kingdom of Nocturna, where commoner Meryn Cooper fights in underground arenas to protect her family from kidnappers known as Nabbers, only to enlist in the army after her sister Saela is taken, thrusting her into the deadly Bonding Trials to link with massive direwolves. Bonded unexpectedly to the ancient, uncommunicative wolf Anassa—who turns her hair silver and places her in Prince Killian's (her secret boyfriend Lee) elite pack—Meryn endures brutal training, pack purges, court politics, and hazing from nobles who despise her low birth, all while uncovering royal secrets and a 500-year Siphon blood curse. As she navigates tense alliances with savage instructor Stark Therion, her wolf's distrust, and escalating threats from immortal enemies, Meryn grapples with survival, betrayal, and her emerging role in a fracturing realm across Dire Bound, Fury Bound, and beyond, blending visceral combat, primal bonds, and enemies-to-lovers intensity.

DIRE BOUND

Had to jump on the bookstawagon and read Dire Bound! And weeeee what a fun ride! 🎢 YES it does have some of the hamster wheel tropes (who did this to you, one bed at the inn, hidden identity) BUT we love them for a reason. AND the mold is broken in other ways, there are some good twists!

Meryn enlists in the royal army in order to find her missing sister. But her plans take a turn when a Direwolf chooses her as a bonded rider. She has a boyfriend back home in the hood, but she's also caught the eye of Prince Killian and now enter the broody alpha trainer Stark Therion…

I LOVE Meryn. Her inner monologue is funny and fiery and smart. The Direwolves are the best. It's giving Fourth Wing but instead of dragons, it's wolves.

Sable Sorensen is a pen name for two romantasy loving friends, this is their debut novel and it's a huge freaking success. Loved it and can't wait for book 2 (May 2026).

FURY BOUND

I liked it, I didn't LOVE it. Not like Dire Bound. I think I was expecting better with Stark. Especially after all that build up and slowwwwww burn. It just didn't quite hit like I wanted it to. I do like them together. And there were parts I liked, mostly when they were confessing all their feelings.

But the spice was…. something. I don't know, it was strange.

I didn't love how it turned into a story about the Gods. I wanted it to stay a story about the direwolves and the bonded and the siphons and humans. It's too much now.

I'm still invested. Still enjoyed reading it. Just found it a bit lacking and a teeny bit try-hard with the storyline. Dropped my overall rating from a 5 to a 4.5 but still highly recommend this series.

DIRE BOUND

Once again Jamie forced me to read book 1 of an unfinished series. SIGH. Do I love it during the reading journey? Yes, of course. I'm a masochist. Am I going to want to punch her in the face when book 2 comes out in May and I don't remember a damn thing about book 1? Bigger yes! But, at least I'll have THIS review now to hopefully jog my memory. Which I'm sure she'll keep reminding me of going forward.

Hmmmm, I did really like this but there were a few things I didn't and now that we're through the "things" that annoyed me, I'm more excited for book 2. I think as the series progresses, my rating will bump up. It did start a little slow for me and then dragged again towards the middle. BUT! There were some great twists I didn't see coming all throughout. There were also some very predictable things most Romantasy buffs will sniff out a mile away. And a few things I knew were likely coming but were also twisted a little more. I just kind of wish all the best stuff didn't happen at 95% of the book.

It ends with a nice little cliffhanger (that was a good twist for me) so beware! Or don't and read it anyway because it's fun.

FURY BOUND

I liked the story better than Dire Bound because I don't love games and trials and I got tired of that in Dire Bound. I did struggle with starting over with the slow burn and how it was almost a reverse "who did this to you"…..not my jam. Meryn literally says that and that gives me the ick. I wanted more from Stark. There was something he said that I truly couldn't get over for the entire book. My irritation over it lessened but I could NOT forget what he had said in some of his internal dialogue - I don't want to spoil it….but he was an ass and it triggered me. I was also very confused how King Lucien was such a big piece of this 2nd book. I felt like he came out of nowhere…..and then was the central plot of this book.

I did like the twist at the end but I also saw one coming. I also felt like the battle scene at the end was real willy-nilly….

I don't know - I WANT to love it and be so obsessed and I LOVE Meryn and Anassa but this keeps falling a bit short for me. BUT - I still am entertained enough. I mean a 4/5 is still pretty dang good!
