SHIELD OF SPARROWS

This book is everywhere and I wanted to ride the wave. Maybe I had too high of expectations because I thought it was just ok? It was good. But not GOOD GOOD.

I liked the premise of the monsters. And the sickness. I liked Odessa enough. But her relationship with the Guardian was lackluster and the twists were not very twisty.

I was mostly just a tiny bit bored. The first 65% of the book was one loooooong travel journey. With almost zero tension. Can we get a lingering gaze or something? It was entirely too plutonic for me.

I'm invested enough to read book 2 when it comes out but I don't get all the hype for this book.

RITES OF THE STARLING

I was somewhat mid on Shield of Sparrows but I am chronically afflicted with book FOMO so I had to jump back in when Rites of the Starling came out. Good news is I did enjoy Shield more during my re-read. Bad news is I am still mid on the series.

Things I did like: the creepy Voster, the Lyssa infection, the monsters, the starling, the treehouse city aptly named Treow 😂, the way the stories weaved together in the end. All very well done!

While I enjoyed the storyline, the characters felt very dull. I just could never get that invested in Odessa and the Guardian. We were introduced to Caspia and Andreas and they felt robotic as well.

It's again, lots of journeys and quests and time apart and I just got bored. Things felt anticlimactic until the very end. But that ending is DEFINITELY a good cliffhanger.

I will read book 3 because I can't help myself.

Usually I struggle with books/series like this one - where the romance/relationship seems like more of an afterthought. And, believe me, I WISH that part was better in this series! But, alas…I still devoured it and loved it! I think the way she draws out the mystery surrounding what the hell is going on kept me so enthralled that nothing else mattered. I also loved the uniqueness of the monsters and how overall it was a very easy read. There was world building where I felt immersed, but it wasn't overly complicated and I think I really appreciated that brain break.

I LOVED Odessa and her internal banter right out of the gate and that spans the series. Then enters another FMC in Rites of the Starling who is another badass FMC that I instantly also loved. Do I wish the MMCs were better? Yes. But I was entertained enough. I really was so entertained through both books. Can't wait for the end of this trilogy!
