Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry is a slow-burn romantasy where overlooked Princess Odessa of Quentis, long overshadowed by her favored half-sister, is thrust into an unexpected marriage with Prince Zavier of Turan via an ancient treaty rite invoked by his enigmatic Guardian, upending her father's spy plans against the rival kingdom. Shipped to monster-plagued Turah amid naval perils and brutal training under the Guardian's harsh hand, Odessa grapples with distrust, a spreading curse turning victims monstrous, and her evolving role from pawn to warrior. As attacks intensify and secrets unravel—including the Guardian's tormented past and hidden powers—she navigates court intrigue, forbidden attraction, family betrayals, and a desperate quest for cures, forging resilience in a god-cursed realm of beasts, blood oaths, and shifting loyalties.

Jamie’s review

This book is everywhere and I wanted to ride the wave. Maybe I had too high of expectations because I thought it was just ok? It was good. But not GOOD GOOD.

I liked the premise of the monsters. And the sickness. I liked Odessa enough. But her relationship with the Guardian was lackluster and the twists were not very twisty.

I was mostly just a tiny bit bored. The first 65% of the book was one loooooong travel journey. With almost zero tension. Can we get a lingering gaze or something? It was entirely too plutonic for me.

I'm invested enough to read book 2 when it comes out but I don't get all the hype for this book.
