Summer Fridays by Suzanne Rindell is set in 1999 New York City, where Sawyer, an ambitious publishing assistant with dreams of becoming an editor, faces a lonely summer as her fiancé Charles, a driven lawyer, works endless hours on a major case alongside his close colleague Kendra. Suspicious of their partners' relationship, Sawyer connects with Kendra's boyfriend Nick—a cynical yet charming ad agency worker and musician—first through an apologetic email after a rocky encounter, sparking an unlikely friendship that evolves into weekly Friday adventures exploring the city's iconic spots like Coney Island, the Staten Island Ferry, and East Village bars. As their bond deepens through shared vulnerabilities, NYC bucket lists, and mutual encouragement to pursue bolder paths, Sawyer reflects on her future amid heat waves, pre-9/11 nostalgia, and the thrill of unexpected connection, blending rom-com vibes with themes of self-discovery and romantic uncertainty.

Jamie’s review

I saw book reviewers raving about this book so I had to bump it up my TBR and I'm so glad I did! More people need to read this so we can talk about it!

I loved the nostalgia of the 1999-2001 era, messaging over dialup AOL messenger 😆 I loved that it was set in NYC. I loved Sawyer. I loved Nick. I loved Sawyer and Nick. 🔥

I wished we got more on what happened with Charles, his parents, and Sawyer's boss drama. I thought I missed several chapters, but nope! We really just fast-forwarded 2 YEARS 🤨 I was not pleased. Other than the time hop, I loved this book.
