Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

As Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s life, tensions around the village rise and dangerous secrets and jealousies from the past resurface, this time with deadly consequences. Beth is forced to make a choice between the woman she once was, and the woman she has become.

A sweeping love story with the pace and twists of a thriller, Broken Country is a novel of simmering passion, impossible choices, and explosive consequences that toggles between the past and present to explore the far-reaching legacy of first love.

I am staring at the wall shaking my head. THIS BOOK. WOW. This one will stay with me for a long while. I can't stop thinking about it! Am I happy? Am I sad? Am I shooketh? Am I still processing? YES.

Everyone should read this. Surely, it will be a movie or series of some kind with it's massive popularity.

At the core, it's a story about love, loss, and family that spans decades. But that seems too simplified. Just read it. You won't regret it.

Man I love this book. I did actually audiobook this one for my Bookclub - highly recommend because the narrator has a beautiful English accent. I was slightly annoyed in the beginning because you're kept in the dark and feeling confused on parts that turn out to be BIG later on but it all unravels and fits together so incredibly as it moves along. The writing and storytelling in this novel is just MUAH. I literally remember laying on my bed listening to this and gasping OUT LOUD during a twist I did not see coming towards the end. There are actually a few slipped in here and there that just hit you like a semi truck while you're just minding your business crossing the street on a Sunday afternoon. BAM. SHOOK. DEAD. I still ache over this book. Mostly over how much women have to sacrifice sometimes - that was the underlying theme that got to me the most. But just read it - so freaking good.
