The Veiled Kingdom by Holly Renee is a fantasy romance where Nyra, the magicless daughter of a tyrannical king, flees her cruel palace life and ends up captured by rebels who don't know her true identity, forcing her to choose between joining their cause against her own father or facing execution. In the rebels' hidden underground stronghold, she trains as a warrior under the watchful eye of Dacre, the suspicious and brooding son of the rebellion leader, whose intense protectiveness clashes with constant threats and a simmering enemies-to-lovers tension that challenges her loyalties. As Nyra uncovers secrets about the war, her emerging powers, and the blurred lines between right and wrong, she navigates forbidden desire, betrayal risks, and a growing devotion to Dacre and his cause, without revealing how her divided heart or the rebellion's fate resolves.

Tangent – I love how pretty these book covers are 😍
This series is fast paced and spicy! There are tons of similarities between this series and Powerless and it was hard to not compare/confuse them. I like spice so I preferred this series. I won’t say that the plot is unique or there were twists I didn’t see coming, because I would be lying 🤥 I do wish there was more character development, it would have made things more suspenseful.
Dacre is definitely a morally black, problematic MMC. I get why he has haters. I am not one of them. But his connection to the lackluster FMC felt insta-lovey and I definitely prefer a tension-y slow burn.
Overall, this was a fun little predictable read. I’m not mad about it. And we can always count on Holly Renee to spice things up 🌶️

Erica’s review
The good? Dacre’s mouth and what he does with it. The bad? Maybe everything else??? I kid, I kid. I don’t know…I was just a big fan of The Stars and Shadows series so I think I had higher expectations. And even though I don’t know her, I love Holly Renee! Maybe it’s how gorgeous the books are, maybe is her exceptional smut writing and banter…love that girl. But, I do prefer the Stars and Shadows series over this one.
I love a morally gray…fine guys, even a morally black MMC (should I bring up Darius again?), but Dacre was a bit all over the place for me with too little explanation of his awful behavior (one scene in particular – IYKYK). BUT, overall – these are pretty little shorty spicy romantasy books that check off all our fave tropes with a good FMC. They will entertain you AND jazz up your bookshelf. What’s not to love?!
