The First Time I Saw Him, the sequel in Laura Dave's Hannah Hall series, picks up five years after the events of The Last Thing He Told Me, with Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey having built a cautious new life in Southern California alongside Bailey's grandfather Nicholas. When Owen suddenly reappears at Hannah's art exhibition, old dangers resurface, forcing the pair to activate their long-prepared escape plan and flee once more. As they race through Paris and unravel lingering family mysteries amid pursuit and revelations, the story examines forgiveness, unbreakable bonds, and the pursuit of a second chance without disclosing key outcomes.

Jamie’s review

THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME:

This was a super fast, page-turny, hard to put down read! It will hold your interest from start to finish. Somewhat of an eye-roll ending and I had several moments of annoyance with the main character. But it's a great brain break read that will keep you guessing.

THE FIRST TIME I SAW HIM:

I think I liked the sequel book more than the first book! I liked how Hannah knew what to expect and had all the plans ready to go this time when the bad guys came after her and Bailey.

I'm not a big fan of time hops so I didn't love all the back and forth between current day and the past. I also had a hard time keeping Frank and Nicholas straight. Their characters blended together too much for me.

All in all, fast paced, enjoyable read! Especially if you want to see what continues to happen in the aftermath of book 1.

Erica’s review

This didn't live totally up to the hype for me for some reason. I think I felt lost during a lot of it and had a hard time trying to keep it all together. Even now I'm thinking about the 2nd part of the book, when they go to a different city, and it's just messy IMO. But the storyline is interesting and it has a good mystery/thriller vibe for sure. Easy read and will keep you guessing.
