Wicked Games by Kaylie Smith is a dark romantasy series beginning with Phantasma, where Ophelia Grimm, a necromancer inheriting her mother's powerful death magic and crushing family debts, enters a lethal competition in a cursed haunted mansion to win a single wish and save her kidnapped sister. The game unfolds across nine increasingly deadly challenges in a labyrinth of twisting corridors, lavish ballrooms, and demonic temptations, where contestants sabotage each other amid ever-evolving horrors created by the house itself. A charming yet arrogant phantom named Blackwell offers Ophelia a dangerous bargain—his guidance through the trials in exchange for ten years of her life—sparking irresistible attraction that risks breaking the game's cardinal rule against falling in love, all while she battles her fears, OCD, and ruthless rivals without revealing the competition's victor or her heart's ultimate allegiance.

PHANTASMA

Haunted house meets gothic games and trials in this spooky standalone. It was all the rage on booktok and I was influenced when one content creator said "if you loved when Casper turned into Devon Sawa (IYKYK) then read this…" 😆🙋🏼‍♀️

I loved it until the end. Literally, the last 10 pages were so unexpectedly enraging, I had to reread them several times to make sure I understood wtf happened.

Both Blackwell and Ophelia were half baked as main characters. The devils and phantoms and all the paranormal people were confusing instead of scary. So many unanswered questions. I went on reddit to find answers and they were rioting over there lol.

That ending. We were done dirty, friends. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. I would have rated higher but the ending brought down my rating.

ENCHANTRA

Meh. I just never felt invested in the characters. Again. Genevieve and Rowin are fine, the games and trials are fine, the backstory is fine. Everything is just fine. I'm already forgetting this story, it's just kind of forgettable. Not BAD, but not great. It was entertaining enough and a good spooky season read, but I found it too similar to Phantasma.

PHANTASMA

Meh…it was just ok for me. Also read during spooky season and it just kept reminding me of the Haunted Mansion Disneyland ride so I had a hard time taking it seriously. I just couldn't really connect with any of it and the MMC was also not for me. I also feel like it's not talked about enough that the MMC Blackwell actually treats the FMC Ophelia like shit when the big twist comes around. Jamie and I were both like - what a dick! But I swear no one ever talks about that! Then Jamie had to explain WTF we just read via Reddit. And I still didn't understand. Which is why Enchantra was a hard pass for me.
