The Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, starting with From Blood and Ash, is a sprawling romantasy epic set in the kingdom of Solis, where the veiled Maiden Penellaphe "Poppy" Balfour lives in isolation, destined to Ascend as a divine vessel while grappling with forbidden desires and a sheltered existence under the watchful eyes of the Ascended royals. Assigned the charismatic guard Hawke Flynn, Poppy's world unravels through steamy encounters, brutal Craven attacks, Descenter rebellions, and revelations about the gods-forsaken lands beyond the protective Rise, including the lost kingdom of Atlantia. As political intrigue, blood rituals, and enemies-to-lovers tension with Hawke intensify across books like A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire and beyond, Poppy uncovers her hidden powers, confronts betrayals, and navigates a war-torn realm of vampires, wolven, and ancient curses blending high fantasy action, spice, and emotional depth.

I could not put these books down. BIG fan of the Blood and Ash series 🙋🏼‍♀️ it was a top 10 read for me in 2024. Fae and Vampires are the best combination.

I liked Poppy but the curious questions trope got really old. There was entirely too much dialogue and repeat dialogue at that. But Casteel. CASTEEL is a top 5 MMC for me. A good mix of Rhysand and Xaden. 🔥

I did feel there was too much world building and backstory filling and “that’s impossible except it just happened” moments. But it’s easily overlooked when you have page-turning twists and spicy scenes throughout.

Erica recommended this series to me after she recommended Zodiac Academy and it was just what I needed after the mental anguish that ZA put me through. She really redeemed herself and I felt I could trust her again.

I read this FIVE (at the time) book series on a week long vacation with my family. 😬 Thank God we were lying by the pool – a lot. I could not put these books down. They consumed me in a way a series hadn’t in a while. I did read this earlier in my Romantasy journey so the twists were twisting and I’m so glad I wasn’t able to predict them in the way I sometimes can now.

The betrayal I felt was SO real….I was right there with Poppy wanting to get all stabby too! But Casteel. CASTEEL. (Side note: Jamie and I write these completely separate- we coincidentally wrote the EXACT same thing here 🤣). He does not get the hype he deserves anymore! He’s been pushed down my list too because we’ve had to wait TWO years between books 5 and 6, but he’s still at the tippy top of my Book Boyfriend list – now and forever.

JLA gets a little complex in her world/God building and explaining and linking it all can get a little dragggggy with the dialogue (not different from my reviews 🫣) but Poppy and Casteel + the lovable supporting characters have great banter most of the time so, again, consumed. Oh – and the spice is spicinggggg. TBD for an updated review once books 6 & 7 come out. Cannot wait! This is one of my all time favorite Romantasy series.
