The Siren Mage by Kalie Cassidy is a dark romantasy series beginning with In the Veins of the Drowning, where Imogen Nel conceals her siren heritage—complete with alluring powers, black wings, and bloodlust—in a kingdom that hunts her kind as monstrous threats under the cruel King Nemea, who has kept her captive and compliant since childhood. Forced into a betrothal with the king's ruthless captain Evander, sworn siren slayer, her secret nearly unravels until visiting King Theodore from a neighboring realm recognizes her true nature and proposes a desperate blood bond alliance: his aid in escaping in exchange for her help defeating a greater undead menace plaguing their waters. As they flee across treacherous seas teeming with nekgya horrors and divine curses tied to ancient deities like Eusia and Ligea, their proximity ignites slow-burn tension between duty, desire, and moral ambiguity, while Imogen awakens her volatile magic amid political intrigue, betrayals, and the risk of becoming the very monster she fears.

Jamie’s review

Uhhhh what the hell?! What was that?! How dare this book be that good!! The hype is real, friends. I absolutely lovedddddd it. I need book 2 NOW.

Imogen is a Siren and has been kept under lock and key her whole life on a remote island by a cruel King intent on killing all Sirens. She sees a way to escape when a visiting King Theodore agrees to help. Things happen, truths are uncovered, yada yada yada… it's INCREDIBLE. The writing is very Rachel Gillig coded, the world is giving One Dark Window meets Pirates of the Carribean. I freaking loved it.

The partially decomposed nekgya sea creatures added a fun, spooky element. SUPER creepy! And I also loved the Mr Darcy-esque dialect. So much fun.

IN THE WAKE OF THE RUINED

My reread of In the Veins of the Drowning went swimmingly (get it) and I loved it even more reading it a second time in preparation for In the Wake of the Ruined. Yay for a complete duology!

It's such a creepy, mystical world with sirens and sea creatures and stolen magic. I loved it! It's like Little Mermaid meets Pirates of the Caribbean and they are all playing hide and seek 👀😂

I did love Imogen and Theo but I wished they were more reckless, they were entirely too responsible 😂 It was sweet but everything felt a little too polite. I got a little bored in book 2 and the end felt a little lackluster but all in all, this series is wonderful and I will be recommending to everyone.
